Whiteboard of the Week: Aircraft Cockpit Large Area Display (LAD)

An aircraft cockpit requires a complex power system: the large number of complex instruments require a variety of different power rails, whist space and weight must be minimized. The second Whiteboard Power Chain of the Week illustrates one solution developed by a Vicor applications engineer for one of our customers.

Powering a Homecoming in 90 Days: Part 2

This is the second post in a series that describes how Vicor Custom Power developed a solution for the Navy to replace an obsolete power supply, despite having no specifications for the part that needed replacement. If you’ve not read it yet, read the first post here. Our task began with an initial architecture that would rectify the input AC power and develop the necessary voltage and power to the output.  We knew right away that this would take a fair amount of physical space, plus we had an estimate as to how power would...

The New MIL-COTS PRM® Regulator

The new Vicor PRM regulator (MPRM48NF480M500A00) is based on our VI Chip® platform, and provides power density of 106W/cm3 and efficiency of 97.7%. The new regulator delivers 500W output power in the same package size as our earlier generation 120W MIL-COTS PRMs. For applications such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) this fourfold increase in power density can provide a game-changing advantage. Designers of military systems are acutely focused on achieving aggressive size, weight and power (SWAP) profiles that will give military vehicles greater agility to fulfill increasingly ambitious missions. Reducing the weight of UAVs...
