Why Engineers Need a Non-Isolated Bus Converter (NBM)

Bus converters are highly popular, flexible power components that traditionally provide an isolated intermediate bus voltage to power PoL (Point-of-Load) converters or serve as an isolated voltage source. They are widely used in applications such as ATE, server, telecom, and industrial control. Last week we announced a different type of bus converter – a non-isolated fixed ratio bus converter module (NBM) based on our ChiP package: the first bus converters that do not offer isolation. So why did we create this new category of power components? There are several advantages in removing the isolation:...

Vicor Launches First Product in Revolutionary ChiP Package

Today Vicor announced the first product to use the revolutionary Converter housed in Package (ChiP) power component platform. The new ChiP bus converter modules (BCM®) deliver 48 Vdc with an output power of 1.2 kW, 98% peak efficiency and 1880 W/in3 (115 W/cm3) power density: a stunning four times the density of competing solutions. Gary Gill, Director, VI Chip product line at Vicor, was on-hand to answer our questions about the launch: This product uses new packaging: why is that important? This is the first product to be housed in the ChiP platform, which...

MIL-COTS Bus Converter Module Reduces System Size and Weight

Military aircraft and ships typically use an isolated 270 VDC power distribution system, specified to MIL-STD-740E/F. However the equipment it supplies, such as radar, processors, radio, satellite and GPS all requires lower regulated or unregulated DC voltages. Vicor’s new high-efficiency, non-regulated MIL-COTS BCM bus converter MBCM270F450M270A00 operates from 270 VDC power and is fully MIL-STD-740E/F compliant. It provides a nominal 45 VDC output with better than 96% efficiency and over 800 W/in³ power density. Minimising equipment size and weight, while maintaining power capacity, is always a primary concern within mobile military applications, whether air,...
