Stratospheric Wi-MAX-HAP

The University of York, working with Swiss technology company Strat-XX, are developing a WiMAX-HAP system. This aims to deliver WiMAX wireless broadband services via cellular networks and spot beam antennas as the payload on stratospheric High-Altitude Platforms (HAPs), such as airships or hot-air balloons, at an altitude of around 21 km above the earth. The basic concept for the system is shown below: Using one customer premises equipment (CPE) as a gateway to the wired internet, at least one other remote CPE is linked to the wider internet via the HAP payload. Other users...

Multiple Inputs Power Supply Architecture

Some electronic systems, such as field communication shelters or portable emergency equipment, must be able to operate from a variety of power sources, for example worldwide AC (85–264 Vrms), vehicle battery power, or portable generator sets, in both the 12 V or 24 V standards. In addition, these systems may also require backup power from auxiliary batteries in case the primary source is interrupted. An example of this power supply architecture is shown in the figure below (click for larger image). For AC line use, a front-end module accepts a universal AC input and...

Mobile Radio (Helicopter)

A professional mobile radio, used for civil and military communications, emergency services, aid, vigilance and control, is powered by Vicor. The modules provide mechanical and thermal ruggedness, correct temperature and humidity ranges, Radio Frequency Susceptibility (radiated and conducted) performances, high-efficiency, and shock and vibration resistance. The European Organization for Civil Aviation Electronics (EUROCAE), who works jointly with RTCA in the development of standards, defines a series of minimum standard environmental test conditions and applicable test procedures for airborne equipment. The purpose of these tests, which last 20 days, is to determine the performance characteristics...
