Thermal management for Cool-Power isolated DC-DC converters

Communications and storage equipment designers remain under constant pressure to increase system performance whilst using less board area and smaller form factors. Improved power system density can make a significant contribution to this goal by freeing up board space for system-level features. Picor’s new PI3101 Cool-Power Isolated DC-DC converter offers designers an ideal solution, with a power density up to three times greater from less than half the size of conventional packages. The 60 W PI3101 has a regulated output of +3.3 V, operates from a 36 V – 75 V input voltage range...

Droop-Sharing in a Compact Satellite Up-Link

Droop-Sharing in a Compact Satellite Up-Link

Droop-sharing is often the easiest and most reliable method of producing a redundant bus onto a backplane of a rack-based system. The method not only eliminates the need for a complex and vulnerable communications bus between PSUs, but also allows the backplane bus voltage to be further stepped-down to lower voltages to remove the need for absolute and precise regulation. These advantages, in conjunction with Vicor VI DC-DC converters, are being used in a compact satellite up-link, capable of fitting into a 3U rack. The up-link required a distributed bus of +7.2V at 12A...
