White paper explains Vicor power thermal circuit modelsThermal Circuit Models are tools for making thermal calculations that are analogous to electrical circuits. Electrical resistors are used to represent thermal, current sources replace heat sources and voltage sources are analogous to temperature sources.

Calculations using these models are accurate, and the underlying calculations are the same as those used in Vicor’s suite of online tools. The thermal data is also the same, but the online tools provide more extensive temperature-dependent electrical performance modelling than can be achieved with the circuit models.

The white paper explains how circuit models for different packaging technologies are constructed, and how the maximum internal temperature can be used to determine whether the anticipated operating conditions will ensure reliable functioning of the device.
