Bodo’s Power Features Vicor Article Explaining the Move to +48 V in Communications Systems

May 28, 2015

Bodos Power Systems LogoThe latest issue of Bodo’s Power features an article written by Chester Firek, senior product marketing manager at Vicor, describing how telecoms and datacoms equipment manufacturers have migrated from -48 V to +48 V power systems, allowing them to take advantage of power components developed for other markets, particularly data center servers.

In the past -48 V was selected because it reduced the vulnerability to corrosion caused by crude charge-control systems, humidity, and poor ventilation in the battery rooms of that era. With better environmental controls, power system designers can move to +48 V and take advantage of more efficient and more compact converters to supply downstream loads such as processors and line cards.
