DCM Arrays are Ideal Solution for Power-Hungry Applications from 320 W to 4.8 kW

With modern electronic systems demanding more and more power, it can be difficult to find a power component that is able to deliver sufficient energy. The Vicor power component design methodology is a simple approach that allows designers to build exactly the power chain they need by combining different functional blocks to create a flexible solution that delivers all the power rails the application requires. Engineers using this approach would simply select multiple power components to increase the current output.

Increasing the output current by using several converters in parallel is not always straightforward in practice. Unlike the DCM, and many other Vicor converters, some power products have not been designed to work in this manner. Connecting these converters’ outputs in parallel can be fraught with problems, with differences in the output voltages resulting in wasted power, and inconsistencies in the switching frequency potentially resulting in beat frequencies on the input and/or output of the converters.

These problems have been eliminated by the Vicor DCM family, which has been specifically designed to allow up to eight devices to be connected in parallel with no need to derate the outputs, meaning that DCMs can be used to create a regulated, isolated DC-DC solution from 320 W to 4.8 kW. With output voltages of 48, 36, 28, 24, 15, 12, and 5 Volts and nominal input voltages of 24, 28, 48, 270, 290, and 300 Volts, the ChiP DCM enables a vast range of potential power systems that will meet the needs of many different applications.
