High Voltage BCM in ChiP Package Named Power System Product of the Year

Elektra Awards 2014At Vicor we’re delighted that the High Voltage BCM in ChiP packaging technology was named Power System Product of the Year at the recent Elektra Awards ceremony in London, England. The award recognizes the outstanding performance that is enabled by the ChiP platform, resulting in a product that offers power density several times better than competing solutions, as well as high output power and efficiency.

We won the award against an impressive shortlist of power innovations from many of the industry’s leading companies. The BCM was selected because of its outstanding performance and its important role in enabling the deployment of high voltage DC (HVDC) power distribution systems.

The latest BCMs in the ChiP package are optimized for a 400 V HVDC nominal input voltage, which is rapidly becoming the standard in a range of applications such as data center power distribution, although its wide (260 to 410 V) input range supports other standards, including the popular 380 V.

These BCMs convert the HVDC supply directly to a 50 V output, delivering 1.75 kW of power from a compact package that produces a power density of 2750 W/in3, (167 W/cm³):. Peak conversion efficiency is 98%, ensuring that HVDC systems can deliver the reduction in power that the technology promises.

The Elektra Awards are the industry’s most respected European awards. They were presented at a gala ceremony in London, England last week that was attended by over 380 of the industry’s top executives.
