Whiteboard of the Week: Aircraft Cockpit Large Area Display (LAD)

An aircraft cockpit requires a complex power system: the large number of complex instruments require a variety of different power rails, whist space and weight must be minimized. The second Whiteboard Power Chain of the Week illustrates one solution developed by a Vicor applications engineer for one of our customers.

This power chain provides 1 V, 1.8 V, 3.3 V, 5 V and 15 V from a single 28 V supply. Picor Cool-Power isolated DC-DC converters produce 5 V and 15 V directly from the 28 V, and a PRM and VTM pair is used to generate an isolated 12 V rail, which additional Picor Cool-Power ZVS Buck Regulators can use to efficiently produce the three lower voltages.

The overall high efficiency of this power chain (84.6%) means that losses are kept to 26 W, minimizing the need for heatsinking, enabling further size and weight reductions.

Aircraft applications require a rugged design, and this system also needed to meet military specifications for reliability. The products’ encapsulated design and certification to MIL-COTS standards mean that these requirements can be achieved with ease.
