Westcor MicroPAC is a small, flexible and highly efficient fan-cooled, AC-DC power supplyThe new Westcor MicroPAC is a small, flexible and highly efficient fan-cooled, AC-DC power system.

Built with a wide range AC Power Factor Corrected front end, integrated hold-up, filtering, and built in immunity. It provides a choice of semi-regulated output voltages of 12, 24, 36 and 48VDC, up to 1300 watts.

So what makes it special?  It does all that in a package size of just 4 inches by 1.72 inches by 7.45 inches for a power density of greater than 25 W/In3.

The first Westcor product to utilize Vicor’s VI Chips inside, it takes advantage of the flexibility of these high performance power modules. For those looking for a standard off-the-shelf, complete product the integration of the VI Chips gives designers the opportunity to benefit from the Sine Amplitude Converter (SAC) topology that is the driving force behind Vicor’s VI Chip converters: superior speed and efficiency (Go to the blog post Sine Amplitude Converter Topology Explained to find out more).

Flexibility

The front end is connected to an output stage of up to 4 BCM modules, which may be configured as single outputs, parallel outputs, or a series output, dependent on the application requirements.

The small high performance VI Chip BCM high voltage bus converters provide final voltage conversion and isolation to the output.   The size and performance benefits of the BCM are key in this new power system.

BCMs offer the flexibility for a number of modules to be connected in parallel to provide up to 10 kW of output power.  In addition, using an array with downstream VI Chip PRM regulators and VTM current multipliers can provide a complete system solution from AC to load.

The MicroPAC is truly global.  The unit has all necessary certifications for sales anywhere in the world, a wide range AC input (85 to 264 VAC) as well as the ability to operate from DC (120  to 300 VDC).

High efficiency across a wide power range

One advantage of the BCM modules is the capability to design “eco-mode” BCM arrays for improving load efficiency.

BCMs are easily paralleled.  Their modularity allows for enabling/sequencing to turn on BCMs only as required.  This is achieved through the implementation of a “load shedding” mechanism, whereby only the number of output BCM’s required are enabled at any one time, keeping each converter in its “sweet spot”. This way we can maintain High efficiency from 200 to 1300 Watts

See our blog post New Twist on Phase-Shedding for more information.

The MicroPAC is Energy Star compliant. Partly because of its conversion efficiency.  But also through the use of a designed-in “sleep” mode that effectively puts the front end in standby while maintaining all the auxiliary functionality. The total power dissipation in sleep mode is less that 8 watts, which is excellent for a supply rated up to 1300 W.

Rugged and Reliable for Demanding Environments

The MicroPAC is certified to meet demanding requirements for shock and vibration. These include Mil-STD 810 Integrity Test for Vibration, up to 7g per axis for 1 hour each, and 40G Functional Shock.  The unit will also operate at full power over a wide temperature range of -40°C to +55°C

With a high Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) and a field replaceable fan, MicroPAC is highly practical for a wide range of industrial and defense applications where the environment is demanding, high density is required, and efficiency is critical.
