New FIAM Family Product for Defense Applications

Vicor’s Filtered Input Attenuator Modules (FIAMs) are designed for power systems engineers needing front-end EMC filtering and transient protection without incurring excessive costs, delay or demands on space. The FIAM family has just been extended for defense applications by the addition of the MIL-COTS 28Vin M-FIAM7B.

This new device, like the existing FIAMs, provides EMC filtering, transient protection and inrush current limiting, to meet relevant MIL Standards. The M-FIAM7B is compatible with 28 VDC V•I Chip and VI BRICK modules.

The M-FIAM7B, which uses active clamping, is qualified to MIL-STD-1275A/B/D for transient spike and surge immunity, as well as MIL-STD-704A-F and, for commercial applications, DO-160E. It also complies with the MIL-STD-416E Standard for EMI conducted emission and conducted susceptibility, satisfying appropriate test procedures defined within the Standard. The M-FIAM7B is environmentally qualified by complying with altitude, explosive atmosphere, vibration, shock, acceleration, humidity and solder test standards within relevant parts of MIL-STD-810F, MIL-STD-202F and MIL-STD-202G. The device is subjected to rigorous environmental stress screening, including temperature cycling and an extended burn-in cycle ranging from 12 to 24 hours’ duration, depending on the target product grade.

The M-FIAM7B is a development from the existing M-FIAM7 product. Whereas the M-FIAM7 is ideal for driving one PRM/VTM chipset, the M-FIAM7B can be used for driving up to three. The M-FIAM7B accepts a 14–50Vdc input voltage and has a 400 W,25 A output rating with a typical efficiency of 98%. Its robust, encapsulated construction protects it within demanding environments, while its compact low-profile half-brick form factor, high efficiency and heat sinking baseplate allows use within space-limited, height-critical and restricted-airflow configurations. The device is suitable for naval, military ground vehicle and some military and commercial airborne applications.

Vicor’s growing family of FIAM devices are an enabling technology for V•I Chip and VI BRICK power distribution designs. These small, lightweight components allow systems designers to protect their hardware from external power supply disturbances, removing the need for extended development time to achieve the same results in the same space. The M-FIAM7B’s MIL-STD EMI filtering and transient protection qualifications increase designers’ confidence in achieving trouble-free qualification for their own complete products.
